چکیده

Detection of confounding and confounders is important for observational studies, and especially so for epidemiologic studies. Miettinen and Cook (1981) derived two criteria for detecting confounders. Using a model, Wickramaratne and Holford (1987) proved that the two criteria are necessary but not sufficient conditions for confounders. We take uniform nonconfounding to mean there is no confounding at a coarse-subpopulation-level obtained by pooling any number of subpopulations. We discuss the necessity and sufficiency of the two criteria for uniform nonconfounding. The concepts of homogeneity and collapsibility for causal effects are also defined, and the relation among confounding, homogeneity and collapsibility is discussed. We show that the common causal effect over all fine subpopulations is just the causal effect of the whole population.

Conditions for Non-confounding and Collapsibility without Knowledge of Completely Constructed Causal Diagrams

In this paper, we discuss several concepts in causal inference in terms of causal diagrams proposed by Pearl (1993, 1995a, b), and we give conditions for non-confounding, homogeneity and collapsibility for causal e€ects without knowledge of a completely constructed causal diagram. We ®rst introduce the concepts of non-confounding, conditional non-confounding, uniform non-confounding, homogeneit...

Confounding in health research.

Consideration of confounding is fundamental to the design, analysis, and interpretation of studies intended to estimate causal effects. Unfortunately, the word confounding has been used synonymously with several other terms, and it has been used to refer to at least four distinct concepts. This paper provides an overview of confounding and related concepts based on a counterfactual model of cau...

Methodological issues of confounding in analytical epidemiologic studies

Background: Confounding can be thought of as mixing the effect of exposure on the risk of disease with a third factor which distorts the measure of association such as risk ratio or odds ratio. This bias arises because of complex functional relationship of confounder with both exposure and disease (outcome). In this article, we provided a conceptual framework review of confounding issues in epi...

A further critique of the analytic strategy of adjusting for covariates to identify biologic mediation

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic research is often devoted to etiologic investigation, and so techniques that may facilitate mechanistic inferences are attractive. Some of these techniques rely on rigid and/or unrealistic assumptions, making the biologic inferences tenuous. The methodology investigated here is effect decomposition: the contrast between effect measures estimated with and without adjust...

Identifiability, exchangeability and confounding revisited

In 1986 the International Journal of Epidemiology published "Identifiability, Exchangeability and Epidemiological Confounding". We review the article from the perspective of a quarter century after it was first drafted and relate it to subsequent developments on confounding, ignorability, and collapsibility.
